This year Cornwall Corridor Block Club and Ancient Beauty Food Forest teamed up during Motor City Makeover to clean up the 4800 block of Somerset from Cornwall to East Warren.
We had a great turn out ... great, as in we had six extremely hard-working friends show up on that misty morning. We were so honored that our beloved Councilwoman Latisha Johnson stopped by as well!
When you plan a clean-up/beatification happening involving a majorly neglected site that requires many steps performed by a small army, you have to be realistic. Task the six beautiful souls who show up to take on the most challenging dirty deeds, which will in turn inspire you and/or others not to give up; then keep circling back to chip away afterwards.
We focused on scraping the terrible overgrowth and garbage from the sidewalks, revealing long hidden driveways and curbs. The crew weed whipped the mangy street berms. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to remove the weeds from around the street trees to plant the flowers this year, but we almost cleared the entire sidewalk to E Warren. It was clear to me that Ebony Williams works out; she and her best friend cleared a lot of sidewalk!
Since MC Makeover, my husband Gaston and I have gone back for some more fine tuning. There’s lots more to remove and plant. We are reintroducing native pollinator plants and bird- friendly trees and shrubs. We could also really use some volunteers to transform our neighborhood into an uplifting heavenly haven that supports wildlife.
