J.E. Clark Has Closed: Have a Say in What Happens Next

For exactly 100 years, the beautiful school in Morningside has been more than just a building. It has been a place where students discovered who they were, where friendships formed over lunch tables and classroom projects, where teachers became mentors, and where generations of families entrusted their children to a community that cared for them.

Schools become woven into the fabric of a neighborhood in ways that are often invisible until they are gone. They become landmarks not just on a map, but in people's lives.

Now, that chapter has come to an end. What comes next for J.E. Clark?

According to DPSCD officials and current school staff, the building is slated for demolition. While Clark is certainly not the first Detroit school to close, its future raises important questions for the neighborhood it has called home for a century.

Over the years, Detroit Public Schools has closed hundreds of school buildings across the city. Many sites have found new uses, but dozens remain vacant and deteriorating. According to public records, more than 60 former Detroit school buildings still sit abandoned, a reality that many neighborhoods—including Morningside—know all too well.

Residents understandably want to know whether Clark will face the same fate or whether a different future awaits the property.

Current staff say the school board plans to move forward with demolition within the next two years, with additional details expected following the board's June meeting. For a neighborhood that has spent generations gathering around this building, those decisions matter.

The end of J.E. Clark as a school marks the close of an important chapter in Morningside's history. But it also presents an opportunity for residents to help shape what comes next.

If you'd like to learn more about the future of the site, what redevelopment could look like following demolition, and what possibilities exist for this central piece of the neighborhood, consider attending the upcoming DPSCD community meetings on June 16. More info below:
