Morningside Café Isn’t Just a Coffee Shop Any More
For several years now, Morningside Café has been the place to pick up your morning jolt of java on your way to work or stay for a while if you need a quiet place to study, work on your computer, catch up with a friend, have a business meeting, or just strike up a conversation with a random neighbor. All this comes with a side of good hot coffee, a pastry, or a freshly made sandwich. (The grilled cheese tastes just like my childhood and is my go-to lunch there).
Now Jeffrey D. Lewis II, owner of Morningside Café, has added live music to his menu.
“One of our goals for this year was to incorporate more entertainment than we have in the past and consistent musical acts from some of the best talent in Detroit was definitely one of them,” says Lewis.
On a recent Friday I stopped in to hear Horns of Plenty, two seasoned musicians who know their way around a saxophone and trumpet. And they can sing! Saxophonist, Mike Hudson, and trumpet player and singer, Greg Mathis have a combined 90 years of performing. Greg was also a member of famed Detroit R&B group, The Floaters.
They treated us to a great mix of jazz and Motown. Their beat was so infectious that at one point I just had to get up and dance (way in the back, of course, where no one could see me).
Jeff plans to host music on Friday evenings on a regular basis. To make sure you don’t miss another performance of live music in the neighborhood, follow Morningside Café on Instagram.
