From the MCO President: Spring Will Be Busy in Morningside!

I don’t know about you, but somewhere around February, I started thinking about spring. Whether or not Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, I was ready already. How about you? Now that spring has arrived, it’s time to tidy yards, gather to vote and enjoy all that blooms here in Morningside.

Spring brings election season for the Morningside Community Organization (MCO). Nominations for the Board will be taken at our April General Meeting and just before the elections at the May meeting. Any member who has attended at least three meetings is eligible to participate in both the nomination and election process. This year we will be electing a new Treasurer, First Vice President, and all six Member-at-Large positions.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 11475 E. Outer Drive, Detroit, MI 48224. We encourage everyone to come out and meet your community representatives. The elections will be held at the same time and place on Tuesday, May 12.

If you are looking to add a tree to your landscape, there are a couple of opportunities to receive a free tree. Keep Growing Detroit (KGD) will host a free tree giveaway on April 23. Additional information will be release by the organization. The City of Detroit also offers an ongoing program that provides a free tree to be planted in your front yard. The details and application can be found here: City of Detroit Free Tree Application

Please save the date for our neighborhood cleanup during Motor City Makeover on Saturday, May 16, 2026. We will have opportunities to plant flowers at our new neighborhood entrance signs at the following locations:

  • Corner of Mack Avenue and Alter Road

  • Mack Avenue between Outer Drive and Audubon Road

  • Harper Avenue Exit 222B near Devonshire Road

Additional projects and times will be announced by E-blast as we get closer to the date, and everyone is welcome to participate. There will be tasks for most levels of ability.

There are areas of Morningside that will take a group effort for clean-up and maintenance. Join us for neighborhood cleanups in partnership with East Warren Development Corporation and our MCO Blight Brigade. We’ll provide the dates and supplies where your helping hands will be appreciated. You’re also encouraged to report debris and illegal dumping through the Improve Detroit app or online here: Improve Detroit / See-Click-Fix

Please watch for updates, dates, and announcements through our texts, emails, and social media.

Happy Spring, Morningside!
