You may have noticed the smell of fresh baked dough as you drive along E Warren Ave. Flamz Pizza is back open under new ownership and the oven is hot! I had a chance to talk with part owner Maurice Clark to get the “slice” on what’s new and what Morningsiders can look forward to.

Maurice is part-owner of Flamz Pizza with Jermaine Jackson. The two have known each other for over 20 years and grew up together around East Warren. Both have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Maurice owned and operated his own franchise previously, but when the pair saw that the Flamz location was available after it first closed, they couldn’t let the opportunity pass. Excited about the great location and the opportunity to provide amazing pizza to the neighborhood, they started to build a great business on the foundations already there.

When you walk into Flamz you are greeted with bold red walls and a smile. It’s a welcoming space where you feel like you could just sit down and chat for a while over a good slice. The brick pizza oven shines from behind the counter and reminds people that they do things differently at Flamz – all pizzas are fresh and fired in their brick oven. When asked what his favorite part about the business was, Maurice said “Meeting the people and putting a smile on their face”. He said the Morningside neighborhood has been very welcoming and that people are excited they are back open. He hopes they can continue to meet more neighbors and provide them with a great meal.

The menu is extensive, and though they specialize in brick oven pizzas, there’s a whole lot more. Salads, wings, and subs also fly across the counter and look just as delicious. If you are craving some protein the “City Lover”, Maurice’s personal favorite, is probably for you. But they also know their way around a vegetable and offer a vegan cheese option as well. There is something for everyone to try.

Right now, Maurice says the biggest challenge is figuring out the rhythm for the right amount of dough they need each day since it is made fresh daily. The biggest success is getting to see all the happy customers and their smiles.

Flamz has not had a grand (re)opening quite yet, but they are currently open every day from 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM for a soft opening to get to know neighbors and get their feedback. Their website is also live and right now they are offering 10% off your first online order (click here). So be sure to drop-in in person or online and check it out. It’s bound to be a new Morningside staple.
