Greetings From the Office of District 4 Councilwoman Latisha Johnson
Our February Monthly Meeting was one for the books. Neighbors, partners, and community leaders packed the room at Purpose Charter Academy, creating an informative and collaborative space focused on strengthening our district. The Chief of Home Repair & Neighborhood Services, Rico Razo, joined us to walk residents through the Critical Home Repair Program, a resource designed to help homeowners address major safety and structural issues.
This program focuses on essential repairs. The goal is simple: help residents maintain their homes and preserve the quality of our neighborhoods. Residents learned about eligibility, the application process, and how the program prioritizes repairs that protect both people and property.
We also welcomed the Wayne County Treasurer, Eric Sabree, who provided crucial information on preventing property tax foreclosure. Mr. Sabree explained the resources available to help homeowners stay current, including payment plans and programs designed to reduce the burden of delinquent taxes. He emphasized the importance of early action and encouraged residents to reach out before small issues become big ones and deadlines arrive.
Thank you again to everyone who joined us. District 4 continues to grow stronger because of your involvement, your questions, and your commitment to our community.
March Budget Hearings
Mayor Mary Sheffield presented her budget proposal to the Detroit City Council on March 9th. This marks the beginning of a month-long process where City Council will hear presentations from various city departments. Starting Wednesday, March 11th, and continuing throughout the month of March, these budget presentations will allow departments to share their budget requests and plans for the upcoming fiscal year.
Council members have the opportunity to ask questions to better understand each department's needs and ensure the community’s needs and concerns are considered during this process. The last day for Council to vote on the budget is Tuesday, April 7th.
In preparation for these discussions, our office partnered with Eastside Community Network to hold a Community Budget Conversation to provide an interactive space for residents to learn about the budget process and share their budget priorities and questions with us. If you were unable to attend the event, you can review the recording here.
Additionally, the Department of Neighborhoods hosted a District 4 Budget Priority meeting on January 27th, where residents were able to provide input on last year’s budget results and share their priorities for the future. You can view the recording from this meeting here.
It is not too late to let your voice be heard! If you haven’t already, please fill out this survey to let Councilwoman Johnson know what you would like to see in this year’s budget.
