Leanne’s Sourdough is Healthy – and Delicious!

What started a few years ago as a desire to eat healthy has evolved into a small business for Morningsider Leanne Germeroth.

“I’ve been making sourdough bread for a few years now,” she says. “Especially since I had my son, I’ve been wanting to make things healthier at home. I’ve had a lot of practice, so now I’m at the point where I can get this out in the world.”

Leanne has been selling her baked goods on Saturday mornings this summer from her driveway on Buckingham, where she lives with her husband Rob and 3-year-old son John. She also had a booth at last month’s E. Warrenfest and other pop-up events around town.

Leanne has chosen to make sourdough instead of other whole grain breads because it’s the most “gut healthy,” she says. As fans of sourdough know, you need a starter to make it, and with the proper care, it will last almost indefinitely. (Fun fact: The oldest known sourdough starter ever revived is approximately 4,500 to 5,000 years old, harvested from dormant yeast inside ancient Egyptian pottery.) Leanne’s starter came from an online source in Chicago – probably no relation to the Egyptian starter.

I’ve tried her regular sourdough bread as well as the herb-cheese and apple pie miniloaves, all of which are delicious!

Leanne’s life has just gotten a lot busier since the family welcomed a new member, Ruth, on September 2. We hope she’ll still find the time to make these delicious baked goods and share them with Morningside and beyond. You can find out what her business is up to by following her on Instagram.
