There’s Still Time to Help Create Detroit’s Future
In the 2022-23 budget, Councilmembers Latisha Johnson and Gabriela Santiago-Romero pushed for the allocation of $2 million to the Planning and Development Department to update the City's Master Plan of Policies. This plan serves as a roadmap for how we as a city would like to see land used over the next 15 to 20 years. Moreover, it serves as a guide to help us develop policies and invest resources to achieve a shared vision.
The Master Plan hasn't been comprehensively updated since 2009. As we know, the City of Detroit has evolved since 2009, and it's important that we assess where we are today and work together to build a better Detroit in the future.
On Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026, The Planning and Development Department provided an update on the plan's progress and community engagement efforts to City Council as they prepare to conclude the update process.
Before the Master Plan is adopted, the Planning and Development Department will continue to engage the community and conduct a public comment period before a public hearing is held for approval by Detroit City Council. Though the process is expected to conclude this year, residents still have time to engage and share input by emailing detroitmasterplan@detroitmi.gov or by calling (313) 628-0221.
